About

Two weeks after buying my house, I sat on a dirty, broken plastic chair in the garden, left behind by the previous owners, and buried my head in my hands in despair.

I'd just moved from a small Victorian flat into a vast, four-bedroomed, boxy, 1968-built wannabe Span house (as in Lambeth council's version of one) – and the task of decorating and furnishing it seemed a mammoth one. None of my lovely old furniture looked anything but freakily incongruous – and I only had around one fifth of the quantity required. I'd also spent all the money I had on buying the place, so had hardly a bean left to make it feel homely.

I passionately believe that style doesn't need to cost buckets of money. But bargain-hunting
does take a big investment of time – and I've certainly put that in over the last few years. Your Home is Lovely is the result of what I have learned, having plundered my journalistic research skills, honed my bargain hunting prowess and window shopped for England in my on-gong quest to create a home that makes me happy, on a budget of next to zero. And I wanted to share it. Hope you find it inspiring. Read more
